Congratulations to Table of Contents, a concept store who opened their doors earlier this month in Portland, Oregon.

Table of Contents is a project that Joseph Magliaro and Shu Hung have worked toward for nearly eight years. Initially inspired by a trip to Berlin in 2004, the pair refined their thoughts and ideas for the project while living in New York, Beijing, Berlin, and Portland, Oregon.

Table of Contents is shaped by Hung and Magliaro’s love of publications, and their approach to the process of developing a retail environment is similar to that of editing a magazine: selecting stories that resonate with personal interests, researching them, and presenting them to an audience. For them, a retail space can function as a

platform for realizing an “expanded” publication, and as a site for aesthetic experimentation with interior architecture, graphics, curation, music, scent, social interaction, photography, styling, etc.

TOC is organized like a biannual magazine, and features a different theme each issue. The phrase “action is character,” a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald, provided editorial guidance for Issue #1, and encapsulates for Hung and Magliaro the notion of making things happen for oneself. The designers presented by TOC all manage to embody this sentiment.

Table of Contents carries men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, books, magazines, small objects, and furniture from around the world. Essentially, it’s a shop “for inside and out.” Brands on the current roster include Patrik Ervell, Correll Correll, Opening Ceremony, Henrik Vibskov, HOPE, Martino Gamper, Max Lamb, Tess Giberson, Tim Coppens, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, and

Zero + Maria Cornejo. Magliaro and Hung work with designers that they admire and wish to learn from, and look for thoughtful approaches to the process of making, attention to detail, innovative use of materials, and a sense of humor.
