Printed Matter presents the third annual LA Art Book Fair, from January 29 through February 1, 2015, at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Downtown LA.
Free and open to the public, Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair is a unique event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines presented by more than 250 presses, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from over 20 countries.
The LA Art Book Fair is the companion fair to the NY Art Book Fair, held every fall in New York City. Over 35,000 artists, book buyers, collectors, dealers, curators, independent publishers, and other enthusiasts attended the NY Art Book Fair in 2014.

THE LA ART BOOK FAIR PREVIEW
Join us on Thursday, January 29, from 6 to 9 pm, at the Geffen Contemporary for a three-hour opening night preview, with special musical performances by NO AGEand PRINCE RAMA.

(XE)ROX & PAPER + SCISSORS
A super-sized subsection of the LA Art Book Fair; (XE)ROX & PAPER + SCISSORS takes over the Geffen annex once again with more than 125 international artists, zinesters, and small presses, offering a survey of independent publishing at its most innovative and affordable. Select exhibitors include: 8 Ball Zines (New York), Wild Life Press (UK), China Indie Library (China), Drippy Bone(LA), among many others.
The Classroom
Back for its second trip to the West Coast for LAABF15, the Classroom is a curated series of conversations, workshops, readings and other artist-led programs, and an informal venue for artists, writers and publishers to feature new releases and present their publications. This year’s Classroom, organized by David Senior of the Museum of Modern Art Library, includes events featuring Johan Rosenmunthe (SPBH Editions), Martine Syms(Dominica), K-HOLE (REDCAT), Goldin+Senneby (Triple Canopy), Raphael Rubinstein (Paper Monument), Richard Kraft (Siglio Press) and more. Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference (CABC)
The seventh annual Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference presents two days of conversations on emerging practices and issues within art-book culture, organized by a national group of art library professionals. This year’s Conference features a keynote address by the artist Frances Stark, who will discuss the significance of text and writing in her practice.
Additional Conference sessions include panel discussions focusing on: artists who mine personal and public archives in their book works and recontextualize images to create new meaning; periodicals as curated spaces for the presentation of artwork; and the dialogue between punk and art in DIY publishing. This year also welcomes “1 Image 1 Minute,” presented with X-Tra Contemporary Art Quarterly, which will bring together 50 artists, curators, writers and members of the art and art book community to present a single image of their choosing for one minute. Based on Micol Hebron’s column in X-TRA, the concept was inspired by Agnès Varda’s television series Une minute pour une image (1983). The full Conference schedule is available here.
Admission is free for all sessions, but space is limited. General admission is first-come-first-seated.
Friendly Fire
A diverse group of politically-minded artists and collectives focused on the intersection of art and activism, this section includes: ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries(Los Angeles), Temporary Services/Half Letter Press (Illinois), Center for Urban Pedagogy(New York), Guerrilla Girls (New York), and others.
Focus: Photography
A curated cross-section of photo-based books and magazines, this year’s Focus: Photography has expanded, and includes: J&L Books (Pennsylvania); Archive of Modern Conflict (UK);Dashwood Books (New York); Mörel Books (UK); and TBW Books (California): Edition Patrick Frey (Switzerland) and more.
Exhibitor Project Spaces
Gagosian Gallery (Los Angeles) presents a special project with Chef Mina Stone and Artist Urs Fischer, launching the first cookbook by Stone, published by Kiito-San. Artist Urs Fischer, creative director for the book, has curated the gallery’s booth to resemble his studio kitchen. Fresh snacks by the author, popular Gagosian publications, and a LAABF exclusive signed print will also be available. Werkplaats Typografie (Netherlands), a fair favorite, presents a collaborative project by its entire student body. Other project spaces include onestar press / Threestar Books(France) with OSMOS (New York) and Karma (New York).
Book Machine (Los Angeles)
BOOK MACHINE is an ongoing initiative by onestar press (France) connecting emerging designers and public participants through the creation of books. BOOK MACHINE (Los Angeles) is powered by students from the BFA and MFA Programs in Graphic Design at CalArts.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
Printed Matter proudly presents an exhibition of Dorothy Iannone‘s artists’ books, with support from Air de Paris, Peres Projects and Siglio Press. Known most widely for her painting, text and video works that explore and reflect upon her time in Europe, Iannone’s work chronicles her experiences as an artist and her relationship with Dieter Roth. The American-born, Berlin-based artist is famous for her whimsical, colorful and, perhaps most importantly, explicit depictions of female sexuality – which have, since the 1960s, often fallen prey to censorship. This exhibition, first staged at NYABF14, is expanded for LAABF15, showcasing a selection of exhibition posters and ephemera alongside Iannone’s original artist books and printed works.
Harper’s Books is delighted to present the first west coast exhibition of new paintings by Irish artist Genieve Figgis. When Richard Prince discovered Ms. Figgis on Twitter in 2013, he could have scarcely predicted the overwhelming response to her work. With her liquescent psychedelic paintings, Ms. Figgis has struck gold in an art world dominated by decorative abstraction. Artforum ranked Figgis’ shows at Harper’s Books and Half Gallery the third best of 2014, and Roberta Smith of The New York Times gave Ms. Figgis a stellar review.
Boo-Hooray presents two exhibitions: The Templetons: Books and Zines, a comprehensive overview of the printed work of Ed and Deanna Templeton, curated by Ed and Deanna Templeton, Clint Woodside/Deadbeat and Johan Kugelberg/Boo-Hooray. The Templetons have been publishing books and zines for a couple of decades; this is the first time they are gathered for display together with related artworks. The second, Spot – The Sounds of Two Eyes Opening SoCal Beach Photography 1969 – 1981, is curated by Johan Kugelberg and Spot. The producer of Black Flag, Misfits, Minutemen etc. was a master photographer, his previously unseen pictures of beach culture and punk life in the 70s/80s are iconic, and have been recently celebrated in his first book.
Andrew Roth
PPP Editions will launch Punk In Print 1976-1980: The Complete Mott Collection, a 700 page, 3 volume limited edition. Since the early 1980’s Toby Mott has amassed a comprehensive collection of printed matter relating to the history of British Punk including posters, flyers, zines, tickets, badges and ephemera. Selections of the Mott collection have been exhibited internationally, now it may be referenced in its entirety with full color reproductions and an extensive index. Only 30 copies, the entire edition.

NEW EDITIONS
New artwork editions to benefit the LA Art Book Fair
Allen Ruppersberg‘s TOO MANY BOOKS is a 4.5 ft photo block mounted on MDF featuring a color image (from 1972) of the artist standing beside a towering stack of books. Cali Thornhill Dewitt‘sAdult Books, 2015 is a vinyl on corrugated plastic available in black or white. Edie Fake presents a new 3-color screenprint, Passageway (Black Lives Matter), which also serves as a Ticket Edition to the Opening Preview. In describing this work, Fake says, “this little print envisions a passageway that is infinitely vast; a zone that extends in all directions as we strive for a place where racial justice and equality is embodied in every aspect of society.”
These limited-edition artworks help ensure the event remains free.
